St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital

Located in California’s Santa Rosa Valley, Dignity Health St. John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital provides the residents of Camarillo, CA, with 180 beds and the only hyperbaric medicine unit in Ventura County.

This facility was among the first to have artwork that centered around Dignity Health’s new design standards. ARCH Design worked closely with Corporate Real Estate at Dignity Health to develop artwork standards that followed evidence-based design for Dignity Health’s facilities. These standards were the result of Dignity Health’s Built Environment Improvement Program (BEIP) of 2014 that finished in 2018. St. John’s Pleasant Valley’s facility was one of 41 hospital campuses that saw improvement.

The art on display at St. John’s Pleasant Valley’s new patient tower follows these standards by featuring photography that is colorful and clear to its audience. The nature-based artwork depicts scenery, wildlife and foliage found locally, such as the valley-esque geography, vineyards and orchards, and Southern California’s typical chaparral vegetation of thorny bushes and knotted shrubs. This imagery helps connect the hospital’s staff, patients and visitors to their surrounding area by fostering a comforting healing environment.
